Don't miss a drive along The Blue Ridge Parkway. https://www.blueridgeparkway.org/ Go down Hickory Nut Gap Road back toward Banner Elk and take a right on 184/Shawneehaw Ln towards 105. On 105 take a right towards Linville. Take 221 towards Blowing Rock and you will come to the Parkway entrance. Check for closures during ice/snow.
Plan a day trip South on the Parkway. Linville Falls http://www.ncwaterfalls.com/lin1.htm is the most spectacular falls in the South.
Continue South along the Parkway to Linville Caverns http://www.linvillecaverns.com/ where you can go deep beneath the mountain, and see the trout swimming in the streams under your feet!
Continue south toward Little Switzerland, a charming Swiss Style atmosphere and good eats with an amazing view at The Switzerland Inn https://switzerlandinn.com/
Or take a picnic lunch and stop at one of the picnic tables with views or by a stream along The Parkway.
A bit further south you can walk off your lunch and visit Crabtree Falls https://www.romanticasheville.com/crabtree_falls.htm
Another day trip, head North on The Parkway this time and you will drive over the Linn Cove Viaduct.

Moses H Cone is a bit further up the Parkway and offers a scenic view, local crafts and hiking trails.
